Becoming a Father

There’s been a few key moments in my life that marked me and changed me forever. One of those moments was the birth of my firstborn. Becoming a father had a profound effect on me. It was a rite of passage. All of a sudden, everything that I was; everything I knew at the moment; everything I had done; all fell into place, and I became a man. Because you see, any idiot can get a woman pregnant, but it takes a real man to become a father.

Today’s society goes to a great deal of effort to portray traditional families through a negative lens. But the thing is that traditional families are the best way to raise a human being. Period. We owe that to thousands and thousands of years of natural selection and tradition.

Masculinity is a positive force, as it is femininity, of course. We need both to achieve balance. Take one out, and the castle will fall. You need a levelled, balanced ground (and some strong foundations) to build a castle.

Emil Sutor, “Germanische Familie” (1935)

Don’t get me wrong, though. Becoming a father (a real father) is not an easy task. There are moments when you have no clue what to do. Your time will be mostly spent on your kids (there will be days, sometimes weeks when you will not have time for yourself. At all.) You will have to work harder than ever. Some days you’ll feel miserable, yes. But… if you choose to embrace your role as a (real) father, then you will be changed forever (for good). Your days will be filled with precious moments. You’ll know a joy that those who aren’t parents will never know. You’ll harden up, but will become softer and gentler at the same time. Life will have a purpose once more, and you’ll become precisely what mother nature intended you to be.

Are you up to the task?
